1 – Nucleus®
Nucleus® is a type of cochlear implant system that is designed to help individuals with severe to profound hearing loss regain their ability to hear and communicate effectively. The system consists of a small electronic device that is surgically implanted into the inner ear, as well as an external sound processor that is worn behind the ear.
The Nucleus® implant works by converting sound into electrical signals that are transmitted directly to the auditory nerve, bypassing the damaged or non-functioning hair cells in the inner ear. The sound processor worn behind the ear captures and processes sound from the environment, which is then transmitted to the implant via a small cable.
Once the implant receives the sound signals, it uses a series of electrodes to stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing the brain to perceive sound. Over time, the brain learns to interpret these signals as speech and other sounds, allowing the individual to communicate more effectively and participate fully in daily activities.
