Paravalvular Regurgitation

« Back to Glossary Index

Paravalvular regurgitation is a condition where blood leaks back into the heart through a gap or a space around a heart valve. This can occur after a heart valve replacement surgery, where the new valve does not fit tightly within the heart tissue and allows for some blood to escape. Paravalvular regurgitation can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain, and may lead to heart failure if not treated. Treatment options include medications, repeat valve surgery, or percutaneous procedures to close the gap around the valve. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the regurgitation and the overall health of the patient.
