A healthcare professional who specializes in fitting and prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. Opticians work in optometry offices or eyewear stores, and may also be employed by hospitals or other healthcare facilities. In addition to fitting and prescribing eyewear, opticians may also perform basic eye tests, such as checking vision and determining the need for glasses or contacts. Opticians do not diagnose or treat eye diseases but may refer patients to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for further evaluation and treatment.
