Carotid Stent System

« Back to Glossary Index

A carotid stent system is a medical device used to treat carotid artery stenosis, which is a narrowing or blockage of one of the two major arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. The stent is a small, wire mesh tube that is inserted into the narrowed portion of the carotid artery to help improve blood flow and reduce the risk of stroke. The procedure for placing a carotid stent is called carotid artery stenting (CAS) and it is typically performed by interventional radiologists or cardiologists under local anesthesia and mild sedation. X-ray imaging is used to guide the stent into the correct position.
