Bone Scan

« Back to Glossary Index

A bone scan is a nuclear medicine test that uses a radioactive tracer to examine your bones for signs of disease. A small amount of radioactive material, called a tracer, is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream to the bones. The scan can detect problems such as damaged, thinning, or deformed bones, infections, tumors, and fractures. The scan is a painless test that takes only a few minutes.
