Ambulatory Care

« Back to Glossary Index

Ambulatory care encompasses a wide variety of medical services delivered by a physician, nurse practitioner, or other health care professional in the patient’s home or community. Examples of patient-focused ambulatory care include preventive care and routine examinations (such as annual physicals), mental health services, substance abuse disorders and treatment, cancer screenings, medication adherence programs, inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation services, etc.

Ambulatory care is important because it allows patients to receive medical treatment in a convenient, comfortable location that is accessible to them and their families. Ambulatory care reduces the need for patients to travel long distances or stay overnight at a hospital. This can be especially helpful for people with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or heart disease, who need regular monitoring and follow-up appointments.
